OPeNDAP allows one to give a application a url and have it directly download data. To read this data into matlab use 
loaddap('http://129.236.110.25/SOURCES/.UY/prec/time+integral/%5Blat+%5Drmsover/%5Btime+lon+%5Daverage/dods')
