OPeNDAP allows one to give a application a url and have it directly download data. To read this data into matlab use 
loaddap('http://129.236.110.25/SOURCES/.UY/prec/%5Blat+%5Drmsover/time+differences/%5Btime+%5Drmsaover/dods')
